‘STRAWBERRY THIEF’ BY WILLIAM MORRIS

STORYTELLING PERFORMANCE

‘WILLIAM MORRIS & THE STRAWBERRY THIEF’

MARCH 24TH & 25TH 4PM-5PM FULL $25 CON $15/ 15 +

BUDA HISTORIC HOUSE & GARDEN, CASTLEMAINE

Join me as we amble together through the wondrous & prolific world of William Morris; grandfather of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Artist, poet, wall paper designer, furniture, textile and interior designer, embroider, tapestry maker, writer, book publisher, font designer and utopian- At 15 C.S.Lewis wrote to his father about Morris “besides being a poet- Morris was a wall paper designer, a potter, a hand loom weaver and everything else you can think of” (letter to his father, 25 May 1915) Inspired by nature and beauty, William Morris paved the way to ‘Environmentalism’ and as the Founder of he created and inspired and influenced both C.S Lewis and J.R.R.Tolkein. We do a little digging to discover how Morris's legacy weaved its way into the creative lives of the Leviny sister’s of Buda Historic House in Castlemaine, and how through the Arts & Crafts movement inspired the budding artistic community of Castlemaine. Morris’s vision, creativity and humanity are as relevant today as they were a century ago.

Stories communicate what is generally invisible and ultimately inexpressible...”

‘THRIVE AS AN ARTIST: What does it take?

What do you think it takes? What has it taken you-or taken from you? Or, whats doe’s it GIVE you and GIVEN to you? Together with our roundtable of local artists and art community supporters explore this question with a dash of seriousness and a dollop of vulnerability & frivolity.

DO YOU HAVE A QUESTION FOR THE ROUNDTABLE?

The evening will be in two parts. The Roundtable will discuss the question in depth, offering insights reflections and experiences from their journey as artists and supporters of the local Castlemaine Arts Community.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR THIS EVENT? MAD ABOUT MORRIS

“As a storyteller I so often feel that I am NOT THRIVING in my art- or at life ( a little vulnerability here) so I asked myself- who is my mentor for THRIVING? Out of any artist I know or knew of, who REALLY THRIVED- and what exactly does it mean to THRIVE as an artist in the fist place…have I taken on a cultural belief of what it means to THRIVE AS AN ARTIST? ( success…) Is that what I believe too; or have I just taken it on without really choosing if that is what I believe…

The artist that came to mind as someone who really thrived- not just financially, but creativity and socially- was William Morris. This lead me to wonder HOW Morris thrived. How did he do it…and where their things he did that I could incorporate… the next question was how are artists and the artistic community in Castlemaine and the surrounds THRIVING now- and what does it take for them to THRIVE?

So the idea for a ROUNDTABLE CONVERSATION between local artists and the community came about!”

    * THANK YOU TO THE FRINGE FESTIVAL & MT ALEXANDER SHIRE COUNCIL FOR THEIR GENEROUS SUPPORT OF THIS EVENT

JASON REASON

HAMMER & NEEDLE Faraday

In 2015 Jason moved to Faraday on the skirts of Castlemaine upon returning from living in Hong Kong.

“I have had the great fortune to build my dream workshop and studio and have all the space I could want to be creative, build things, take up space, grow veggies and enjoy plenty of peace anD quieT after busy and fast paced life.”

  • …I like to get involved with the local arts community, and attend many of the great events that always seem to be on offer; I volunteered at a few things to give a little support back, and once I started at the Artists markets I soon got involved on the committee and became treasurer for a period of time.

My work and creativity is multifaceted but essentially based around fashion. My true creativity comes from my own manufacturing; which includes a lingerie brand (iole lingerie) and a leather brand (hammer & needle) which people better know me for around town from the markets-currently in a bit of a holding pattern.

I also utilize my skills to set up to assist other Australian brands with local manufacturing. And lastly I consult to large brands and retailers on operations and off shore manufacturing supply chains.

I am very fortunate to do all these things collectively, and Castlemaine remains an important and supportive part of that equation.

Jason has drawn on his skills in both leather work and women’s fashion to create cheeky piece for the FRINGE WINDOW TRAIL: ‘William Morris Re-Imagined’…be sure to stroll by….

WURUNDJERI WOI WURR\RRUNG COUNTRY

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE THIS EVENT? "I often feel that I am not thriving as an artist... when I saw the FRINGE theme was 'THRIVE',I wondered…

“Who is an artist who thrived professionally and as a human being?”

'MAD ABOUT MORRIS' based on William Morris (1834- 1896) artist, designer and poet was prolific in his creative pursuits. Throughout his creative life Morris pursued the question, 'What does it take to thrive as an artist- and as a human being?’ I was curious about how artists in Castlemaine- a town famed for its arts community, thrive.

Thank you to the FRINGE & Mt Alexander Shire Council for supporting this event.
